Treatment for diabetic foot should be done by a team of endocrinologists, nurses and physiotherapists . It is thus possible to heal the wound, reduce pain and facilitate movement in the limbs.
Treatment for diabetic foot can last for a few months and must be done by a nurse in the hospital at least 3 times a week or when the dressing is dirty or damaged.
During treatment, the patient should:
- Keep sugar levels in check;
- Do not wear closed and tight shoes;
- Avoid wetting the dressing;
- Relieve pressure on affected foot.
To reduce pain during treatment, the endocrinologist may prescribe analgesic medicines, such as Paracetamol, or tricyclic antidepressant medicines, such as Amitriptyline.

- Use of oral antibiotics, such as Amoxicillin or Clindamycin, prescribed by the endocrinologist;
- Treatment of the wound with a silver dressing, to help eliminate the bacteria present in the wound.
In more severe cases, the surgery can be used to remove dead tissue and facilitate circulation, preventing limb amputation.
