Genital warts, technically called condyloma acuminata or venereal warts, are skin lesions produced by the HPV virus.
It is a viral infection and is usually transmitted directly from person to person through close contact when immunity is low. However, this infection has a cure and if treated correctly is not serious.
The incubation time may vary from weeks to months and as soon as they are identified the treatment should be performed to avoid the possible complications that they may bring.
Characteristics of genital warts
Genital warts are located near the male or female genital organs, around the anus or even in the anal canal and in the nearby regions, such as groin.
Generally, genital warts are similar to those of the rest of the body and do not cause pain. They may be small or large, skin-colored, pinkish or brownish, rough or rough to the touch, and may have the appearance of cauliflower or cock crest.
Warts are benign growths caused by viral infection of the most superficial layer of skin or mucous membranes.
How to handle
The transmission of genital warts occurs through intimate contact without a condom and after the wart infection is present it may take 1 month to 1 year or even longer to appear for the warts.
Babies can also be contaminated by developing lesions on the face, mouth or throat region when they are born in normal birth and the mother has the active infection at the time of delivery.
Exams
As not all genital warts can be seen with the naked eye, the gynecologist can request a pap smear and a colposcopy, or peniscopia, in the case of men in order to identify the presence of the virus in the tissues of the intima.
How to treat
Treatment for genital warts is usually done with the use of creams and ointments, however, in some cases the doctor may indicate removal of the warts with laser, cryotherapy with nitrogen or undergoing surgery.
The complete treatment time can take up to 2 years and sometimes, after treatment, the reappearance of the lesions in the genitals.
